2018.9.28 – Saxe Weekly

September 28, 2018

Quote(s) that resonated with us this week:

“Do the right thing… even when no one is looking.”

“Nothing is impossible. The word itself says ‘I’m possible.’”

“Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for

every solution.”

Around the Building:

Here are a few pics of our 6th graders who stepped up to help make posters to advertise the Celebrate Saxe campaign. They willingly gave up their lunch/recess to help out! Thanks to Ms. Reynolds and these dedicated students truly exemplifying “We Are Saxe!”.

World Language – Focus on French

At Saxe Middle School we are lucky enough to have two full-time French Teachers! Madame Fraccaroli and Madame D’Andrea collaborate and cooperate to create and implement a vibrant exciting program for our students 6 -8! As all our languages, we are working towards an Intermediate Level Proficiency, teachers are careful to focus their lessons on the use of language and the increase in understanding of authentic language. Our students commit to a full three years of a language at Saxe and as a result, we have been able to work diligently and effectively towards this goal.

Science

To start the year in science, 7th Grade Science Red Team created rules to define matter. After agreeing that all matter has mass, volume, and density, the students practiced their science skills by measuring these physical properties of matter. They had a great time choosing the best tools to use in order to get the most accurate and/or precise data.

Saxe Video Club

The Saxe Video Club did an impressive job producing their first video of the year. They approached it like true professionals from preparation, to sound, to video, and all the way to the finished product! Check out their interview with Mr. Gusitsch below.

“Saxe In the News”

Saxe goes “Global”

Saving Hummingbirds Is One Small Step in Saving the Planet (NY Times, 9.21.2018)
High in the Andes Mountains in Colombia, a reforestation project led by SavingSpecies works to protect one of the world’s most renowned bio hot spots.

“Alexandra, 11, a student at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan, Conn., had also been invited to participate in the Colombia project, which is how I found myself for two weeks this summer living in a cabin in this remote mountainous territory.”

Check out the rest of this exciting NY Times story that includes one of our very own Saxe students, here.

Safety Tips from our SRO, Officer Deak:

Spending time downtown with friends after school is fun! It should be a time where our kids create memories that last a lifetime. When they are downtown they should always remember:

Have a buddy. The buddy system is a great way to watch over each other when we are away from home. Four eyes are always better than two.

When crossing the street, use the pedestrian crosswalks. The crosswalks are designated areas that allow people to safely go from one sidewalk to another. However, the children still need to look both ways before entering, because some drivers simply may not see smaller pedestrians. Do not run towards the roadway, especially between parked vehicles. This puts children at risk with drivers who simply can’t stop immediately because they don’t see them.

Be respectful of everyone downtown! Store owners, shoppers, each other, everyone. After all, we represent Saxe and we want everyone to know how great we are!

Have a great week!
