2019.2.15 – Saxe Weekly

February 15, 2019

*Quote(s) that resonated with us this week:

“If you think someone could use a friend, be one.”

“Be kind to one another even if you disagree.”

“Be kind and pass it on.”

Dear Saxe Family,

The first stretch of 2019 has been a nice one. We had a conversation this morning about the days being long, but the years flying by. This is why it is so important to be present in our everyday life, be grateful, and not take anything for granted.

I believe that you will find this edition of the Saxe Weekly exemplifies this. From the “14 Days of Kindness”, to gestures of gratitude, and everything in between. I could not be more proud to share just a slice of what makes Saxe Middle School (&, NC) so special.

Whether you are traveling afar, or staying closer to home, I wish you the best for this February break. May you be able to rest, relax, recreate, or do whatever makes you happy!

Be well,

Dave Gusitsch

Principal, Saxe Middle School

Upcoming Noteworthy Dates:

“Character” in action at Saxe!

I am certain “good things” like this happen on an almost daily basis. We get to see many of them, but some acts occur just because we are surrounded by so many good people. It is great when someone gets to witness it. One parent shared the following last Friday. Enjoy…

“As I was waiting to pick up my daughter, a girl was sitting on one of the benches outside. Another girl on crutches was coming from the inside out. The first girl saw her and ran to open the door for her. That made my day! Doing the right thing when no one (or, seemingly no one) is watching.”

Awesome.

“Kindness” in action at Saxe!

Several of our sixth graders handmade 357 personalized notes for every 6th grader! Volunteers worked during lunch, their free time at home, stayed late, and came in early to make sure each 6th-grade locker had a note. Thank you to Ms. Reynolds for her oversight on this act. What a beautiful sight!

“Communication” in action at Saxe

During Monday Meeting this week, fifth-graders participated in another communication lesson. Communication is one of the 3 Cs at Saxe, which also includes Caring and Commitment. During the lesson, the students had to communicate with a partner in order to successfully build one of the four model LEGO structures. What was the catch? It was that one of the partners was blindfolded during the activity, and communication could only be verbal! Throughout the process, the students learned that it is important to communicate in a clear, calm, and specific manner when giving instructions. Check out the pictures from the Helmich/Berry team below!

Saxe Mathletes

Congratulations to our Saxe Mathletes who competed in the SWCT Chapter Mathcounts Competition at Fairfield U last Saturday. The third-place finish in the Team Competition means that several of the students now advance to the State Competition in March at the University of Hartford. Individually, Saxe 7th grader Luke Huang came in 1st place out of out of 173 students! Saxe 8th grader Lucas Liu came in 4th place out of all students. A special thanks to Ms. Wolff and Ms. Robinson for coordinating and coaching. Congrats and good luck at states!

Thank you to our wonderful Saxe PTC for supporting our staff with a terrific lunch, beverages, and treats for our PL Day today. You helped us maximize our learning!

Did you know…

Saxe Instructional Aide Rich Bulan recorded his 350th win as head coach of the New Canaan High School Girls Hockey Team (485 total victories). He has led the RAMS to six state and FCIAC championships. Congratulations Rich!

Terry the Crossing Guard

Wishing our crossing guard, Terry, a fond farewell before break. His last day is 2.28. Thanks for keeping all of “our kids” safe at the South/Gower crosswalk for all these years, Terry!

Sharktank Experience

Grateful to Mr. Mark Pires, inventor of the #GigBox, for sharing his creative process with our 7th-grade future innovators. What a great experience for Saxe students to hear about a concept going from idea to production!

Favorite “hat” of the week!

We had a mini snowstorm this week, but also some beautiful days
