May 31, 2019
Dear Saxe Family,
As we round out May and head into the final weeks of the school year, we remain focused on finishing strong and ending the year on a positive note. This time of year is busy, to say the least, which is all the more reason to be present and mindful of ourselves, our students, and the experiences we will all carry into the summer.
This week we take a look at Saxe Mock Trial, Music, Grade 4 to Grade 5 Transition Events, Enrichment Experiences, a trip to the Maritime Center, and much more. Also, be sure to check out the latest One Second Everyday for the past several weeks. Soon, we will be posting the 1SE from the entire 2018-19 school year! A fun way to see hundreds of snapshots from the whole school year…
Enjoy and have a great weekend,
Dave Gusitsch
Principal, Saxe Middle School
Upcoming Noteworthy Dates:
6/4 – Grade 7/8 Choir Concert, 7:00pm
6/6 – Grade 8 Lake Compounce Trip

*Quotes that resonated with us this week:
“If you aren’t willing to work for it, don’t complain about not having it.”
“Never let success get to your head. Never let failure get to your heart.”
“Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited about what could go right.”
Back again for this week – the latest, updated Saxe Middle School 1-Second Everyday! “Life is made of seconds.” Check out a few seconds from each day of 2019 (so far), showcasing so much of what makes Saxe Middle School great. This is a recurring, bi-weekly feature. At the end of the year, we will have a full version that includes every single day of the 2018-19 school year. Enjoy!

Saxe Mock Trial
Thank you to Mr. Fusci, Ms. Fulco, and Judge Underhill for kicking off the inaugural Saxe Mock Trial in style! It was a great evening and hopefully the start of a fine opportunity for Saxe students.
Saxe Music
Congratulations to the students who performed in the final NCPS Student Recital at the New Canaan Inn yesterday afternoon! Also, thank you to Mrs. Rosen for all of her hard work. Student performers were from Saxe and the elementary schools. These recitals are open to any student K-12 in the New Canaan Public Schools. They take place in November, March and May of each year. To sign up, contact your child’s music teacher.
4-to-5 Transition Events
This week featured two big events, the Grade 4 to Grade 5 Parent Welcome Evening and the Grade 5 Welcome to Saxe Fun Night! Both were well attended and fun was had by all! Thanks to our staff who volunteered on this beautiful Friday evening, parents who helped out at both events, and to our wonderful 5th-grade tour guides! It was terrific to see them proudly make the rounds and speak about “their” school.

Enriching Experiences
On Thursday, a representative from the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame spoke to our 7th & 8th-grade students highlighting the contributions women have made in the field of STEM throughout history. Here is a quick blurb from the introduction: “Women Transforming Our World – Women have been transforming our world through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for centuries. This program demonstrates the myriad of ways Connecticut’s pioneering women in STEM have transformed our world.”. In addition to sending an excellent message, it included New Canaan’s own, Emily Dunning Barringer who was the first female ambulance driver to secure a surgical residency!
Saxe in the News
Ethan Xia, grade 8, won a gold medal in the Northeast Regional Rowing championships on May 19th, in the youth double. This was rowing against High School rowers, which makes it quite an accomplishment. Ethan will be rowing at the U17 national championship this coming weekend competing in a quadruple scull. Good luck Ethan and teammates!
Saxe Visits the Maritime
Several Saxe students took a field trip to the Maritime Center this week. In addition to the intriguing sites and sounds around the Center, students and staff were treated to a special show by our very own, Ms. Jarosik in the shark tank!
Around Town
In light of the recent events in town, we wanted to offer our sincerest positive thoughts to all involved. As a Saxe family, we would like to remind you that if your child has questions or is in need of any support, our counseling staff is available. We are fortunate to have such a strong support staff who are well-trained, experienced, and always ready/willing to assist.
Have a great week!
* A special thanks to Mary Calabrese for the continuous stream of positive, optimistic quotes!
