2022.5.27 – Saxe Weekly

May 27, 2022

Dear Saxe Family,

As we head into this long holiday weekend, I would like to thank all of our military family members and show appreciation for the sacrifices of all who bravely served. Thank you! As challenging as life can often be, we have much to be grateful for, and to be proud of. It is my hope that you are able to enjoy the upcoming weekend by spending time doing something you enjoy, with those you care most about.

This week in the Saxe Weekly, we take a look at World Language, some of our NCHS/Saxe interns, some important dates, STEM, Saxe Spirit, caring gestures, some brain breaks, 3D printing, VR, Grade 4 to 5 Transition, some birdhouses, outdoor learning, a Saxe birthday, and much more. Enjoy and have a wonderful long Memorial Day weekend!

Be Well,

Dave Gusitsch

Principal, Saxe Middle School

“Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life.” – Dr. Mae Jemison

“Something special awaits you each day. All you need is to recognize it and make the most of it. Have a positive attitude throughout the day and then that today is going to be the best day of your life.”              – Anonymous

“Hard work keeps the wrinkles out of the mind and spirit.” – Helena Rubinstein

“Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.” – Madam C.J Walker

Happy Memorial Day

Thank you to our dedicated men and women who served our great country to allow us to celebrate the freedoms that we have!

World Language

Ms. Fraccaroli’s 8th Grade Advanced French class recorded weather reports using a live green screen. Students created their own maps, scripts, and used the Design Lab studio to record. Students had to point to various French cities on the map as they discussed what type of clothing to wear and activities to take part in depending on the weather in that particular city.

Saxe Interns

7 Red student, Josh Brown brought a T-Shirt for intern, Matt Wronski to match. Ms. Kiley shared that Matt has developed a nice bond with her students in the past few days.

Katie Servido is working with 8 Green Team students on monologue writing and presenting.

8th Grade Important Dates

Future Engineers NASA team

On Tuesday, the five students involved in the Future Engineers NASA team displayed and presented their project to parents and co-winners of the competition from 52 other schools across the country. Parents were invited into Saxe to see all of the hard work the students have been putting into their Raven Weather Balloon experiment. The student team also presented their project to actual engineers who work with the flight teams at NASA. Students were excited to present their work and share their progress with everyone involved and the team appreciated all of the support and feedback as they prepare to ship out their project to the launch site in South Dakota in less than a month. Take a look at their presentation!

Saxe Spirit

6 Blue celebrated the letter “L” of the ABC countdown by writing letters to those who lift us up each day. What a wonderfully thoughtful gesture and those who receive them will certainly be grateful! #SaxeCares

Move to Learn

Ms. Adrian included some Brain Break activities into the day for her students this week! This is a great option for those students who need a little movement or just to take a break… Students were very receptive!

Tweet Street

Below are photos and phrases that were included on our Saxe middle school Twitter page (@SaxeMS) this week. Enjoy!

Through a series of workshops, Science teachers at Saxe explored 3D modeling and 3D printing to further their understanding of what students are learning and how they might integrate it into their curriculum.

Our 6th Grade STEM Lunch Club students are visiting the International Space Station and building robots with our new Meet Edison kits.

So proud of our student leadership team who presented to South Grade 4 today about the transition to Saxe.

Our dedicated Custodians keep our Saxe outdoor learning spaces in such great shape… Grateful for our team!

Our STEM group who recently won the Nasa Tech Rise challenge got to meet with a NASA rep and several other groups from across the country today. Amazing opportunity and so proud of these pioneers!

Thanks to Vivian Birdsall and the STEM experiences she provides for our students!

Some great participation with the 6th-grade A-Z countdown. “Jersey Day” was a hit and saw lots of classics from some great teams!

Some more action on the “big map” at Saxe. Love seeing the movement based learning taking place outside!

Another birthday caught “on film” during morning drop off – hope it was a great day! 🎉

Looking forward to the Grade 5 Parent Orientation session!

Thanks to all who came out to the Grade 5 Parent Orientation this week! It was well attended and our panel (esp. our students!) did a terrific job… Here they are in action!

Thanks to @newcanaancares for joining our Grade 5 Parent Orientation this week! Great tips for parents & students around tech/cell phones…

We received a beautiful bouquet of fresh-cut “home garden” flowers at drop off this week… What a kind gesture that brought many smiles to those who walked by them the rest of the week! 💐

Have a great week, see you next Friday!

Thank you to all of our Saxe Weekly contributors! Each weekly edition is an example of collaboration in action. A special thanks to Lauren Sherwood for the continuous stream of positive, optimistic quotes!
