2024.4.8 – Saxe Weekly *Special Solar Eclipse Edition*

April 8, 2024

Dear Saxe Family,

Today was another special, memorable day at Saxe Middle School. The April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse has been hyped up for quite some time, and today, it did not disappoint! Our Upper Division students got to view the beginning as they dismissed from school at 2:30 while our Lower Division students got to see it at its peak just before 3:30 p.m..

With the careful planning from our dedicated team of Science teachers and the thoughtful execution of the plan by all of our teachers, our students were treated to this rather rare celestial event safely and well-informed about exactly what was happening. A special thank you to Ms. Rende, Mr. Ekstrom, Mr. Tomasiewicz, and Ms. Meyer for their dedication and for leading the way in ensuring this was a successful viewing experience! Thanks to NCPS for providing the solar eclipse glasses and thank you to Planet New Canaan for offering to responsibly recycle* them (more info below)

This week in the *Special Solar Eclipse Edition* of the Saxe Weekly, we take a look at tons of pics from the April 8th Solar Eclipse! Enjoy and have a great week!

“In partial totality”,

Dave Gusitsch

Principal, Saxe Middle School

* Planet New Canaan has generously offered to provide recycle collection boxes at our Main and Lower Division entrance lobbies for students (or, parents) to drop their glasses off to be responsibly recycled to be reused and not end up in a landfill. Please encourage your child to bring their glasses in tomorrow to be recycled. Thank you!

Stay tuned for more pictures and videos in the Friday (4/12) edition of the Saxe Weekly! If you have any spectacular or special photos that you took or would like to share (local or in totality), please feel free to send them to me (david.gusitsch@ncps-k12.org) and Ms. Jarosik (lisa.jarosik@ncps-k12.org) and we will include them in the Weekly Friday.

Now, here we go – Enjoy! A few slides from the student information slide deck to learn and ensure safe viewing…

Slides were included in our daily slideshow leading up to the big day as well..

Upper Division students got to see the very beginning of the eclipse at dismissal, on the ride home, and hopefully once they got home!

The jury is still out on whether students or adults enjoyed this memorable moment more!

6Red enjoyed the experience from the center courtyard:

6Blue took in the experience from Conner Field:

6 Purple set up shop out in front of the building:

6Green enjoyed from the Hawk’s Valley courtyard:

Grade 5 took their viewing party to the Hawk’s Court space:

“Real-life experimentation”!

Pics through the solar eclipse glasses turned out pretty good!

The Library patio offered a nice view, blocking the sun while showing some “sky colors”!

The sky was mostly blue, but the light level was noticeably lower as the moon reached its peak coverage of the sun (92%) in New Canaan…

What a day! Have a great week, & see you back for another Weekly on Friday!
