2021.6.17 – Saxe Weekly

June 17, 2021

Dear Saxe Family,

Congratulations to everyone in our entire learning community on a successful 2020-21 school year. Whether you are a student, a parent, a staff member, remote, in-person, or some combination of any of these, you can proudly take a deep breath and say, “we made it!”. This past year+ has challenged us in so many more ways than we could have imagined, but everyone in the NC community rallied and made the best of a difficult situation, together. We have said “thank you” a lot this year, but each time is for a good reason and is 100% sincere. If you are reading this, thank you for being part of what allowed us to collectively be successful! I could not be more grateful to be a member of this amazing community…

In this final edition of the Saxe Weekly for 2020-21, we take a look at a poem about this crazy year, Latin, dramatic speaking, the 8th-grade Promotion Parade, 8th-grade Celebration, some videos to commemorate these events and this year, Saxe Soaring Hawks, memories and moments from this year, an epic Dogs of Saxe montage, our Saxe Hawk does a fly-by, one final good-bye to our students from the bus loop, and much more. Enjoy and have a wonderful SUMMER!

Be Well,

Dave Gusitsch

Principal, Saxe Middle School

*Quotes that resonated with us this week:

Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not given.” -Hussein Nishah

“Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything” – Alexander Hamilton

“Every task, goal, race and year comes to an end…therefore, make it a habit to FINISH STRONG.” – Gary Ryan Blair

“Take pride in how far you’ve come. Have faith in how far you can go. But don’t forget to enjoy the journey.” – Michael Josephson

A Crazy Year

Please take a moment to enjoy the poem in full by clicking on the poem title, A Crazy Year. Here is just a quick view of the final two parts of the entire poem:

A whole year in school,

Who’d have thought?

Our teachers and staff,

Amazing support!

A crazy year,

We still stand tall,

We really have to thank,

Saxe Middle School!

Ameila, thank you!

Latin

Latin news: 7th and 8th grade Latin students took the National Latin Exam this past March. They took the exam online for the first time ever due to Covid. This didn’t stop them from putting in their best efforts. Congratulations to all students for participating!

7th grade Latin students performed a play for their classmates, a fine culmination to our “Theatrum” unit. The play was about the legend of Romulus and Remus. Typically, Roman actors would wear masks to identify the different characters in plays:

6th grade Latin students had the chance to research and showcase their knowledge of Ancient Rome by producing either a Travel Brochure or a diorama:

Featured: The Pantheon, the Temple of Vesta with the eternal sacred flame burning, and a “taberna” or shop.

8 Green Oscars

The 8th Grade Green Team wrapped up an amazing year and the Dramatically Speaking Unit with final presentations and an Oscar Award Ceremony in the Auditorium. Congrats to all!

Grade 8 Promotion Parade

Thank you to everyone who helped plan, organize, volunteer, or simply came out to the 8th grade Promotion Parade today! It may have rained a little, but that didn’t dampen the spirit! Enjoy a quick clip that shows some of the fun:

Dogs of Saxe were very well represented during the parade!

There was tons of creativity and spirit on display!

Some serious planning went into this awesome sign (bonus DogofSaxe in the photo)!

It was great to include all of our students in the parade!

What’s better than a little sibling banter?!

Thanks to our awesome PTC, we were prepared for any weather and spirited in our celebration!

8th Grade Celebration Event

So grateful the 8th-graders got to experience a terrific, whole class celebration this evening. They have been through so much and it was nice to see everyone smile, have fun, and enjoy some time together! Thank you to all of our staff members and parent volunteers who helped pull it all together…

Participation was great and there was something for everyone!

8th Grade Celebration Video

Below is a link to the 8th-grade celebration video for you to enjoy. Saxe staff and students share a great story and it nicely captures much of what made this year special. Thank you to our wonderful PTC for helping make this possible and please enjoy the Saxe Class of 2021 Celebration Video:

Around Saxe

Officer Deak and Ms. Risoli prepare to visit East to meet and welcome some of our new/incoming students for the 2021-22 school year!

Recently, staff members were asked to share a photo, quote, or memory that reminds them of this year. Below are some great memories that capture the fun, craziness, and positivity of this year!

Each day, Grace and Maeve get dropped off with a big, out loud, windows down “I love you!” from their Dad. Every. Day. They are great sports and have fun with it. During the Promotion Parade, Dad tried to up his game with a sign and didn’t realize it was upside down, so we took a quick selfie to capture the irony 🙂

At today’s final dropoff, Dad “got it right” and the girls got to have some fun with some signs of their own… Thanks to Ms. Orlando for helping coordinate this fun exchange!

Love seeing the great shirts around Saxe!

In case you can’t read their shirts, they say, “I survived teaching during a pandemic – 2021”

Congrats to our friends and former students “across the street” on their graduation from NCHS this week! It was also fun to watch grads and their families pass by Saxe in the parade.

The balloon arch made it through the night for one more prop to welcome our students today!

Even the 5th-grade teachers got in on the fun…

Dogs of Saxe

For one last hurrah, please enjoy a Dogs of Saxe video montage created by Ms. Sherwood and Ms. Orlando. Thanks to them you can enjoy many of our favorite 4-legged friends from this year, and more!

Saxe Hawk

Our Saxe Hawk gave us one final closeup fly-by to help us celebrate the end of the school year!

Each year on the last day of school, teachers line up to wave goodbye one last time. It is a special moment and filled with lots of joy, happiness, and emotion!

Have a great summer!

* A special thanks to Lauren Sherwood for the continuous stream of positive, optimistic quotes!
