May 6, 2022
Dear Saxe Family,
This week, we continue to have much to be grateful for. The sun came out and gave us a glimpse of Spring. Our PTC put on one of the most epic Teacher Appreciation Week lineups, ever (thank you to ALL involved!). And, as we go into the weekend, we get to celebrate all of the great Moms in our Saxe community on Sunday, for Mother’s Day (students, please remember to treat your Mom extra-special this Sunday, or, all weekend!). 🙂
In the Saxe Weekly this week, we take a look at Science, lots of Math, School Counseling, Physical Education, outdoor activities, online book fair, saluting our Nurses and school lunch workers, a ton of teacher appreciation, preparing to welcome the Saxe Class of 2026, ongoing schedule work, scenery around Saxe, May the 4th, STEM, and much more.
Enjoy, Happy Mother’s Day, and have a wonderful weekend!
Be Well,
Dave Gusitsch
Principal, Saxe Middle School
Upcoming Noteworthy Dates:
5/8 – Happy Mother’s Day!
5/11 – School Nurses Day
5/12 – 6:00 – 7:30 pm – Incoming Grade 6 Orientation
*Quotes that resonated with us this week:
“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” – Confucius
“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive, to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” – Marcus Aurelius
“Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” -Joshua J. Marine
“I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.” – Larry King
Happy Mother’s Day!
“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power; or, the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.” – Maya Angelou
“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” – Abraham Lincoln
“No language can express the power and beauty and heroism of a mother’s love.” – Edwin Chapin
Grade 8 Science
The Seek app allows users to identify organisms using image recognition technology. By taking photos, students were able to classify the trees found on campus down to the species level. Students on 8 Red surveyed the Saxe campus and were able to identify a number of different tree species. This was a great springboard into further research and discussion about the biodiversity that exists here at Saxe.
Mathematics
Students in Mrs. Lanna’s Grade 5 M5/6 class use manipulatives to understand one-step-equations. Students deepen their understanding as they collaborate to discuss and solve problems together. These mathematical conversations help students solidify their understanding. They also digitally practice matching math equations with real-life situations on DESMOS, an online exploration tool.
Students in Ms. Bohlmann’s Math 7 class are working on measures of central tendencies. Students worked in teams using whiteboards in a run relay race. As the teams were challenged with problems, they were able to self-identify which types of problems they wanted to continue to study.
Students in Mrs. Andrews’ 7th Grade Pre-Algebra class have been practicing their exponent rules. This week, they did a “color by number” which was a fun way to practice!
Students in Mrs. Andrews’ 7th Grade Algebra class created a geometric proof of the Pythagorean Theorem.
School Counseling
Grade 7 students were selected to be new student buddies for next year. On Wednesday, these students were trained on their new roles and taught how to engage their new students. They practiced by meeting other 7th-graders that they’d never met and initiating conversations with them. Our new students will be lucky to have this group supporting them when they transition to Saxe. We look forward to welcoming our newest community members in style!
Physical Education
Grade 5/6 students in Miss Goodman’s PE class are finishing up their unit activity of pickleball. Students have been learning and practicing forehand, backhand, volley, and the underhand serve while also applying the rules of pickleball to doubles games.
Grade 7/8 students in Miss Goodman’s PE class are completing their unit activity of badminton. Students have been learning and practicing clear, drop, smash, and a few types of serves to use during game play and apply some doubles strategy.
In all 4 grades, students have been demonstrating an understanding of the game while practicing and perfecting their skills. Students are communicating with their partner and being supportive to the other teams. Both activities are great to play this summer or at camp to have fun and work on Muscular Strength and Endurance.
Mrs. Hendry’s students have been working on their flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance with rock climbing and belaying for each other this week. Many students were able to step outside of their comfort zone to try this fun activity, while also working on how to support one another, communicate effectively and work together as a team.
6 Green Team Fun
The Green Team couldn’t resist the beautiful spring weather this week. There were lots of laughs along with a bit of friendly competition while they got outside to “recharge” for a few minutes. The time outside was enjoyed by all!
