2022.9.30 – Saxe Weekly

September 30, 2022

Dear Saxe Family,

This may have been a 4-day week, but we packed quite a bit in to round out our first full month of the school year. This week in the Saxe Weekly, we take a look at Art, celebrating learning, 7Blue Town Hall celebrations, “upstanders”, Open House, SRO, delicious tomatoes, recess, 5th-grade Fun Run, Health Ed, a Dog of Saxe, scenes around Saxe, and much more. Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Be Well,

Dave Gusitsch

Principal, Saxe Middle School

Upcoming Noteworthy Dates:

*Quotes that resonated with us this week:

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” -Lao Tzu

“You don’t always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens.” – Mandy Hale

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive, to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” – Marcus Aurelius

“Some people dream of success, while other people get up every morning and make it happen.” – Wayne Huizenga

Art

Ms. Duncan’s Art students have been loving working outside in the new outdoor learning center. On Wednesday, the fifth graders got inspiration for their drawings while working in nature.

Our seventh graders are having a great time learning about one-point perspective in Art. They are applying the skills they used in their portfolio letter to their landscape drawings.

Celebrating Learning

Fun Fraction Friday with Mrs. Hines! (What could be better on a Friday?)

7 Blue September Celebration

The month and week ended on a high note for our 7 Blue students as they participated in their first team celebration recognizing students who exemplified the September words of the week: Kind, Caring, Organized, and Helpful. A special thank you to the 7 Blue teachers, Mrs. Korman, Mrs. Prinz, Mrs. Thomas, and Mrs. Walsh, for organizing the event, including taking care of the certificates and tokens of recognition, as well as the fun events, such as the hula hoop and limbo contests! A fun time was had by all!!

Upstanders

6th-graders had a nice discussion on the difference between mean behavior, bullying, and what it means to be an “Upstander” (and, how easy it can be to “do the right thing”).

Open House

We had a great turnout for our Open Houses this week. Thanks to all who came out to participate, the energy our parents brought to the building each evening was amazing!

The Design Lab and Innovation Space was a destination for many during the Open House. If you did not get a chance to check it out, stay tuned! We will share other opportunities to see this space in the near future…

I even got an awesome picture from one of our “junior attendees” & future Saxe Hawk 🙂

And, thanks to our PTC and parent volunteers who helped provide some delicious staff dinners for Open House!

Tweet Street

Below are photos and phrases that were included on our Saxe middle school Twitter page (@SaxeMS) this week. Enjoy!

Our Saxe SRO Officer Blank, building some positive relationships with some our 6th-grade students during recess today!

Thank you to Tim and Bob who gave our courtyards a nice trim – they are looking great!

Had a nice surprise by one of our Saxe students who grew these delicious looking tomatoes right here on our campus! Thanks, Lihan – our family will definitely enjoy these!

Some fine-looking artwork is “styling up” our hallways at Sax! Thanks to all of our teachers & students – nice work!

Some new activities available at recess and a perfect day to break them in!

The most recent sign update on East Ave is spot on! “NC Kids are the best. Have fun at school!” Love seeing these positive, motivational signs get updated every so often & thank you to the person(s) who surely put a smile on anyone’s face who passes by…

We had a great 5th Grade Fun Run! Thank you to our PTC and staff for making the day a success!!

Fantastic way to end the week with the 7 Blue celebration recognizing our students for demonstrating the September words of the week!!

Sarah Granite, starting the biggest conga line in Saxe history at the Grade 5 Fun Run!

My 7th grade students at Saxe never cease to amaze me. Advocating for a healthy lifestyle to other students through a mini-project around mental/emotional health traits. Even added their own executive function twist. Awesome stuff! (thanks to Mr. Tiscia for sharing!)

Dogs of Saxe

Another photogenic Dogs of Saxe participant!

Some amazing “sky painting” views from the sunset last evening over Saxe!

(Thanks to J. Knowles for capturing/sharing)!

We are grateful for our student helpers during the Open Houses!

You can feel the excitement of the 5th-graders at the conclusion of their annual Fun Run!

Sights Around Saxe

Spotted some terrific movement opportunities in Ms. Ryan’s classroom this week!

The “morning activity club” is out getting some reps in before the opening bell, every day!

We had some beautiful weather this week!

Have a great week, see you next Friday!

Thank you to all of our Saxe Weekly contributors! Each weekly edition is an example of collaboration in action. A special thanks to Lauren Sherwood for the continuous stream of positive, optimistic quotes!
